Pandaravadai, Thanjavur
BISMI is an Aari embroidery studio based in Pandaravadai, Thanjavur. Every blouse, saree border and lehenga panel is hand-worked stitch by stitch — from everyday custom pieces to heavy bridal embroidery. We take a limited number of orders each month so every piece gets the hours it needs.
Aari embroidery is a traditional hand-embroidery technique done with a hooked needle (the "Aari" or "Ari"), which lets a craftsperson chain-stitch beads, sequins, zari thread and mirrors directly onto fabric stretched on a frame. It's the technique behind most heavy bridal blouses and statement saree borders you see in South Indian weddings — dense, textured, and entirely done by hand rather than machine.
Because every motif is built stitch by stitch, a single blouse can take anywhere from a few hours for light work to 30–50 hours for full bridal coverage. That's also why genuine Aari work is priced by the hours and materials that actually go into it, not a flat rate.
We take on three broad categories of Aari embroidery. Whichever you need, it starts the same way — send us a reference image or idea on WhatsApp.
